Cabling & bracing

Cabling & bracing, done carefully.

Some trees grow with two or three main trunks pressed together in a tight “V”. That joint is weak, because bark gets trapped between the stems instead of wood binding them together, and it’s where a lot of big trees split in a storm. Cabling installs a cable system high in the crown so the stems move together instead of pulling apart. Bracing adds threaded rods through a weak union lower down.

It isn’t the answer for every tree. Cabling makes sense when the tree is otherwise healthy and worth keeping, like a big shade tree over the house, and the risk is structural, not rot. If the union is already cracked through or decayed, we’ll tell you honestly that removal is the safer call.

A cabled tree should be looked at every few years, and it’s usually pruned at the same time to take weight off the supported limbs.

  1. The trunk splits into two or more stems in a tight V
  2. A crack or seam runs down from where the stems meet
  3. One heavy limb reaches far out over the house
  4. The tree lost a big limb and the rest is now lopsided

Questions

Cabling & bracing FAQ

Will cabling hurt the tree?

Installed correctly, the hardware is small and the tree grows around it. It doesn’t stop the tree from moving in the wind; it limits how far the stems can pull apart.

How long does cabling last?

The hardware should be checked every few years and adjusted as the tree grows. We’ll tell you what to watch for.
