Cut stump and log rounds in a backyard after a tree removal, ready for grinding

Stump grinding

Stump Grinding, done carefully.

A stump left in the yard is a mower obstacle, a trip hazard and a home for insects. Grinding is the clean way to get rid of it: the grinder chews the stump and the big surface roots into chips below grade, without tearing up the whole yard to dig it out.

Whether we took the tree down or it came down years ago, the process is the same. After grinding, you can keep the chips as mulch, or we clean them out and backfill with soil and seed. That’s how we finished Bob Bonack’s yard after taking down four large trees: stumps ground, soil filled in, grass planted.

To get an estimate, tell us how many stumps, roughly how wide they are, and whether there’s a fence, a garden bed or a sprinkler line nearby. A photo texted to (816) 491-5867 is the fastest way to get a number.

Questions

Stump Grinding FAQ

How deep do you grind?

Below the grass line, deep enough to lay soil and seed over the spot. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same place, tell us at the estimate.

What about buried utilities?

Grinding goes below the surface, so buried lines near the stump need to be marked first. We’ll talk it through at the estimate before any grinding starts.

Can you grind a stump that’s been there for years?

Yes. Old stumps are often softer and grind out faster than fresh ones.
