Deadwooding

Deadwooding, done carefully.

Deadwooding is pruning with one job: get every dead, dying and broken branch out of the crown. Dead wood turns brittle, and in a Missouri thunderstorm or an ice storm it’s the first thing to come down. Big oaks and maples over a house are the usual candidates.

From the lift or on a climbing line, we work through the canopy branch by branch, cutting dead wood back to live tissue and lowering anything heavy instead of letting it drop. It’s the least invasive way to make a big tree safer without changing how it looks.

Deadwooding pairs well with a regular trim, and it’s a smart move for any tree that lost limbs in the last storm. While we’re up there, we’ll tell you honestly what we see.

Questions

Deadwooding FAQ

Is deadwooding different from trimming?

Trimming shapes the living tree. Deadwooding only removes what’s already dead or broken. Many jobs are both, and we quote them together.

Does dead wood mean the tree is dying?

Not necessarily. Shade trees shed inside limbs as the canopy grows. But a lot of dead wood at the top can point to a bigger problem, and we’ll tell you honestly if we think the tree should come down.
