A few things worth knowing: well-seasoned hardwood is the goal. Oak, hickory and ash burn long and clean. Fresh-cut wood should dry six months to a year after splitting, stacked off the ground with the top covered and the sides open to the air. Green wood hisses, smokes and builds creosote in the chimney.
And keep it local. Moving firewood long distances spreads pests like the emerald ash borer, which has already killed a lot of ash trees across the Kansas City area. Wood cut here and burned here is the right wood.
